Tips for Choosing a Coach

Choosing a coach for your skater is an important decision. Here are a few tips to consider when looking for a private coach.

·       Choose a coach your skater feels comfortable with and that you respect both as an individual and as a teacher.

·       It may be helpful to observe the coaches on the ice and to speak to parents of other skaters the coach works with.

·       Don’t be afraid to interview or speak to more than one coach before deciding.

·       Ask questions such as:  Do you coach all disciplines? What is your teaching style? What is your hourly rate? What is your availability? Do you coach year-round?

·       Some coaches specialize in certain areas or specific levels so be sure to ask the coach about their personal skating experience, coaching background and current qualifications.

·       It is also a good idea to discuss your goals, expectations and level of commitment with your potential coach.

·       Be open about financial constraints and up front about any educational or other extra-curricular commitments your skater already has that may impact their training.

·       Always contact the coach outside of regular skating sessions as it is not appropriate to interfere with other skaters’ lessons. Use the contact information provided on this website and make an appointment to arrange for an interview or conversation during a mutually agreed upon time.

Do not be afraid to ask a member of the NBSC Board of Directors for assistance and guidance if you are unsure.
